Muslims fighting for the Greek War of Independence!

Source

The article is in French and the official documents are in Greek. The documents are official letters sent to the Greek Government either during the Greek War of Independence or shortly after. They state cases concern Muslims either Arabs or Turcs, who fought with the Greeks against the Ottoman Empire. Some considered Turcs are actually Muslim Albanians. The reasons they did it were different by every individual. Some were sure the Greek State was more just than the Ottoman Empire, others felt they were protecting their fatherland as they were born in Greece, others had personal reasons. The author of the article doesn't know that many 'Turcs' spoke Greek and that was a sign of a conversion of the local population, rather than colonisation. However the fact that Napoleon and the French Revolution and its ideals had lost and the Greek Revolution had to hide its inspiration and pretend it was a Greek Orthodox Revolution, discouraged Muslims from participating in large numbers. The Patriarch of Constantinople discouraged all the Orthodox Christians by accursing the Greek War of Independence. So in the end only a small part of Greece gained its independence.
